A RESOLUTION ACCEPTING THE RETIREMENT OF
JOSEPH B. HURST AS A MEMBER OF THE BOARD
OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK
AND COMMENDING SAID JOSEPH B. HURST FOR
EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE TO THIS CITY; AND FOR
OTHER PURPOSES
WHEREAS, Joseph B. Hurst, succumbing to the timeconsuming demands of
business - and his tennis schedule - is retiring from service as a member of
the Board of Directors of the City of Little Rock; and
WHEREAS, said business is very important to Mr. Hurst, who got his start
in the florist business posing as Mercury for the FTD florist ads; and
WHEREAS, said tennis schedule is also important to Mr. Hurst, who plays
a fierce game of doubles, so long as his partners are venerable like himself,
and his opponents no more demanding than Maurice Mitchell and Bill Gulley; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hurst has contributed many noble phrases to the Board's
discussion--most of which could not be heard by anyone except those sitting
next to him, and only then if they listened closely; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hurst's habit of conducting his florist business from the
City Board room - during Board meetings - has given new meaning to the phrase
"flower power"; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hurst was shocked to find that the Economic Opportunity
Agency of Pulaski County spent its money no more carefully than he did his
own, and proceeded to spend countless hours in an untiring effort to make sure
the poor of this County get a dollar's worth of assistance for every dollar
spent; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hurst, when awake, has been a rock of levelheadedness, not
easily swayed, but carefully weighing each decision, and has given great
stability to the Board's deliberations by his careful and conscientious
attention to his duty.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF
LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
SECTION 1. That the service of Joseph B. Hurst as a member of the Board
of Directors of the City of Little Rock is hereby acknowledged with deep
appreciation by this Board, on its own behalf and on behalf of all the people
of the City of Little Rock; and that a copy of this Resolution be presented
to Joseph B. Hurst as a token of our respect, affection, and deep appreciation.
