HomeMy WebLinkAbout7900ORDINANCE NO._7900 AN ORDINANCE TO PROVIDE FOR THE NOIaNATIOY OF ALDERMEN IN THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK. WHEREAS, Act 112 of the 1949 General Assembly of the State of Arkansas empowers the City Council to provide for the method by which Aldermen are nominated by any organized political party, and WHEREAS, it is deemed to be in the best interest of the general public that the persons nominated for Alderman shall be nominated only by the residents of the ward wherein such candidates reside, NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: SECTION 1. From and after the effective date of this ordinance, all persons who are candidates for the nomination to the office of Alderman in the City of Little Rock in any primary held by any organi- zed political party shall be voted upon in such primary only by the qualified electors who are residents of the ward in which such candi- dates reside. SECTION 2. The ballot in all city primary elections for the vari- ous wards shall have printed thereon, in so far as the office of Alder- man is concgrned, only the candidates for the office of Alderman who are residents of that particular ward, and the names of the candidates for Alderman shall not be on any ballot in any city primary election except the ballots in the ward where such candidates reside. SECTION 3. There is a great need for clarifying the ordinances of this City concerning the nomination of the Aldermen,and much con- fusion is resulting from the lack of such legislation. The election of Aldermen is a proper and grave concern to the well being and proper administration of the City of Little Rock and this ordinance is necess- ary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety of the inhabitants of such City, therefore an emergency is hereby declared to exist and this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and approval.
