A RESOLUTION ACCELERATING CITY EFFORTS TO
ACQUIRE FLOODPRONE PROPERTY AND DESIGNATING
PUBLIC PURCHASE AS ONE METHOD OF IMPLEMENTING
LITTLE ROCK'S FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT STRATEGY.

WHEREAS, flooding is a serious and continuing problem for many areas
of Little Rock, and
WHEREAS, the City is frequently called upon to approve subdivisions
and to endorse zoning changes involving development in floodprone areas,
and
WHEREAS, the public interest often favors acquiring such property in
order to prevent inappropriate development which may be subject to flooding,
and
WHEREAS, in Resolution #6808, dated June 15, 1982, the Board of Directors
stated its intent to appropriate General Fund Revenue sharing funds received
by the City in 1983 and 1984 in an amount necessary to provide local matching
funds required for the Fourche Creek Basin Flood Control Project, and
WHEREAS, the City is currently pursuing an informal program of purchasing
floodland on an as available basis, and substantial acreage has been acquired
in this way.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF
LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
SECTION 1. Public purchase of floodlands is hereby designated as a key
component of the community's floodplain management strategy.
SECTION 2. Funds will be made available to accelerate the ongoing acqui-
sition program and to put this effort on a firm financial footing.
SECTION 3. The City staff is directed to determine whether or not funds
expended for floodland acquisition can be credited as local share of the
Corps VII Plan for Rock Creek.
