WHEREAS, City employees in several job classifications are at risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens including the Hepatitis B Virus; and WHEREAS, a vaccine is available which is both safe and effective in providing protection against this virus; and WHEREAS, by purchasing the vaccine through the State Department of Health under a federal contract with SmithKlien Beecham, the City can significantly reduce the probability of Hepatitis B infection for "at- risk" employees at the best available cost; and WHEREAS, the City's occupational Health Nurse will coordinate all activities with the Department of Health and ensure proper record maintenance; and WHEREAS, purchasing the vaccine as prescribed will result in savings of approximately $25,000 initially plus future savings of approximately $40 to $50 per at -risk employee; and WHEREAS, prevention of a single Hepatitis B infection will result in savings to the Workers' Compensation program which could exceed the total cost of the immunizations. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: SECTION 1.
