HomeMy WebLinkAbout8960M MR= M M 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 I X41 RESOLUTION NO. 8.960 A RESOLUTION OF INTENT TO ENCOURAGE THE CHIEF OF POLICE TO TAKE ALL ACTIONS NECESSARY TO MEET VIOLENT CRIME ON THE STREETS WITHOUT DETRACTING FROM OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT FUNCTIONS; TO SUGGEST THE USE OF OVERTIME IF NECESSARY TO MEET THESE NEEDS; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO IDENTIFY WAYS TO MEET ANY NECESSARY BUDGET ADJUSTMENTS; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. WHEREAS, the City has seen an increase in violent criminal actions particularly including drive -by shootings within the last several weeks; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has reported to the Board of Directors about this increase; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police, in an effort to stop these violent offenses and to concentrate on gang related violence has pulled officers from the special units dealing primarily with traffic code enforcement including, but not limited to, the enforcement of laws prohibiting drunk driving; and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors believes that all criminal offenses should be addressed and that the Police Department should take all necessary steps to provide safe streets for its citizens even if such actions will require increased budget expenditures for overtime payments; and WHEREAS, this budget impact should be dealt with expeditiously by the City Manager. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: SECTION 1: The Board states its intent to take all actions necessary to combat street violence without sacrificing other traditional law enforcement functions -- e.g., strict enforcement of City and State traffic laws -- and directs the Chief of Police to arrange all necessary police patrols to accomplish this intent even if doing so requires unbudgeted expenditures for overtime salary payments up to $126,000.
