Dear Jamie,
As a follow-up of your appearance before the Little Rock Historic District Commission
(LRHDC) requesting approval to rehabilitate your home, I am enclosing the signed
Certificate of Appropriateness that was approved at the 4 March LRHDC meeting. The
conditions of approval are attached, as taken from the draft minutes.
Reiterating our previous conversation, it is within the LRHDC's authority to approve
rehabilitation projects that are located in the MacArthur Park Historic District. As with all
rehab projects, the level of work is contingent upon the structure's previous appearance
and for your request, that which existed prior to the tornado. While artificial siding was
on the exterior of your house, it is not an approved building material for an historic
district, especially for a structure that contributes to the district's architectural integrity.
The work to bring the porch, roof, dormer, chimneys and foundation back to their
respective original configuration, size and scale, must utilize approved materials. The
LRHDC approved your request to rehabilitate your home contingent upon the removal
of artificial siding, reconstructing the front porch, chimneys, roof and dormer. The porch
reconstruction must have scaled elevations, which I understand is forthcoming.
The LRHDC is delighted to have residents such as your family return to help rebuild the
neighborhood after the tornado's devastation. Good luck in your work, and if you have
questions, by all means call me at 244-5420.
Respectfully,
V. Anne Guthrie
Historic Preservation Administrator
