Foundation vent: The cast iron recessed foundation vent #699 from DSM Due Season—from the link you provided—is acceptable from a staff perspective can be supported by staff. While the
concrete vent may be acceptable, it is more commonly associated with Craftsman style homes of a later period and does not meet the standards set out in the Design Guidelines as well
as the example you provided of the cast iron vent.
Crawl space doors/access: For specifications regarding crawl space doors, please refer to Section 4 of the Design Guidelines <chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https:/www.littlerock
.gov/media/22615/macarthur-park-local-historic-district-design-guidelines-2024.pdf> pertaining to residential foundations. While the guidelines do not explicitly address crawl space
doors as an architectural element, it is advisable to adhere to the general principles for replacement and rehabilitation outlined in Sections 4.1–4.3. If custom dimensions are required,
consider providing an example of a finished steel crawl space door product to illustrate your intended design outcome.
Rear stairs: If the existing wood steps are too deteriorated for repair and require replacement, an in-kind replacement is encouraged, provided that necessary modifications are made
to comply with code requirements. Please consult Sections 4.12 and 4.13 of the Design Guidelines for guidance on residential porches and steps, as well as specifications for porch handrails.
Dark colored cast iron or metal handrails simple in design that meet code requirements are typically encouraged when you are not reconstructing original handrails.
Baseboards: The term "baseboards" works to refer to the architectural exterior trim located at the base of the structure, between the cladding and foundation. Will achieving this require
any alterations to the exterior of the building? New materials? Design modifications beyond aligning the baseboards?
Front porch: Any proposed work on the front porch will necessitate a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) approved by the Commission. It is advisable to review Section 4 of the Design
Guidelines, particularly those pertaining to porches, as you develop your proposal. For additional information regarding 515 Rock Street, you may explore the Arkansas Studies Research

Thanks for coming out to see my project and give feedback.
Here's what I have so far on the foundation project. This is a semi-draft to get the conversation started. I'm attaching photos of a couple options for foundation vents. Ultimately,
I'm flexible on what we use so long as it is high quality. Simple is fine. Do you have any recomendations or preferences? I know you mentioned not using some ornate Victorian looking
styled vents. It looks like placing a vent in every other in-fill brick section would likely look best. Seems like every in-fill section is a little overkill.
Crawl doors. I would like to do 3 locations. 2 on the very back (facing alley) and 1 on the north side facing the apartment building (the apartment building has all of their AC coils
right there so it feels like a good spot). The north side one would likely be wood due to it only being roughly 18" tall. I like the idea of using commercial doors on the back. I would
have to cut and custom fit them, but they would be very secure long lasting doors. Is there any other type of door that you would prefer?
Here's a link for what I mean when I say commercial doors. I would be modifying 1 like this to be roughly 3.5-4' tall and 36" wide.

Stairs at the back entrance of the house. I don't know what you would allow for this. I could simply keep the wood steps and follow just the foundation, (under the stairs), with brick.
Or, I could brick the stairs or do a combination of say brick sides, (maybe wing walls), with wood steps. I'm mostly mentioning the steps with the thought of dealing with the open area
under them that currently has plywood. If possible I would like to eventually update the hand rail with one of those black cast iron type handrails you often see around historic properties.
What's there now is a poorly fitted galvanized plumbing pipe. The old photos show a wood handrail I believe. Is there a standard that your office recommends?
Baseboards. I don't know the architectural term for this. I'm attaching a couple photos. I would like to make a more seamless transition between the original house and the addition with
1 continuous baseboard. I attached 4 photos.
Front porch. This kind of ties in with the brick in fill, but is a project I will tackle later. I'm thinking about knocking out the current brick porch and going back to a pier and beam
like the old photos show. Essentially, I would like to put the house back as close as possible to its original form. I haven't had a chance to research yet, but I'm curious if I can
find any earlier photos other than what your office currently has. Maybe from the first family that lived there, the Samuels, I believe.
I know this is alot to throw on you. If we need to discuss by phone that is ok too. I realize every house could be a sort of unique scenario with the foundation, but are you aware of
any other examples in the district that have done what we are attempting?
