Dear Mr. and sirs. Herbert:
It has come to the attention of the Quapaw Quarter
Association that you are thinking of demolishing the turn -
of -the -century cottage you own at 1002 Pock Street. As I
hope you are aware, over the past decade or so the trend
has been to restore, rather than to demolish, the old homes
in the vicinity of MacArthur Park. In fact, the organization
of which I now am the director, the Quapaw Quarter Association,
was establi§hed in the 1960's specifically to encourage the
restoration these homes and other historic buildings. As a
result, dozens and dozens of houses dating from the 19th and
early 20th centuries have been restored to their original
appearances and continue to function usefully as homes,
apartments, and offices.
- You may believe that the cottage at 1002 Rock Street
is not historic or that its deteriorated condition makes
demolition your only alternative. Actually, the house is a
"Priority II" structure in the MacArthur Park Historic
District (which means that it is "considered valuable for the
period or style of [its] architecture" and is "of visual or
historic significance"). Further, houses in far worse
condition than yours at 1002 Rock have been restored by
individuals committed to preserving the historic integrity
of the neighborhood around MacArthur Park. Finally, you
should be aware that, because the house is located in the
MacArthur Park Historic District, you will not be able to
obtain a demolition permit without first receiving the
Little Pock Historic District Commission's permission to
demolish the house.
I realize that the maintenance of 1002 Rock may have
become a burden that you no longer are willing to bear, but

I hope you will consider selling the house rather than having
it demolished. If you are interested in listing the house for
sale, I will be happy to discuss with you how its sale as a
historic house might be handled for your benefit as well as
that of the MacArthur Park neighborhood.

My "informant" in the matter of 1002 Rock St.
(see enclosed letter) tells me that the owners are
"do-it-yourselfers" who just might by-pass applying
for a demolition permit. We will try to keep an
eye on the house --can the city do the same? The
owners have said they will demolish the house by the
end of the year.
