Mrs. Roberts,
I have spoken with several of our staff members and we are concerned with the roof projecting over the original front
roof line, especially in conjunction with the large change to the rear of the property. However, the ultimate decision
does lie with the HDC in terms of approval on a local level. Listing in the National Register of Historic Places is an
honorary designation and holds no federal requirements on a property owner. However, local codes and protections,
such as the Historic District Commission may have local control on changes to various structures. The loss of National
Register status within a Historic District will also make a property ineligible for the various incentive programs such as
tax credits and grants.

this email to Mr. Brian Minyard, with the city, and Ralph Wilcox, as they have had a conversation about this structure
previously.

Ms. Williams,
Hello. I live in the MacArthur Park Historic District at 1014 South Rock. We purchased our home in 1994. At the time
that we purchased the house an addition to the back of the house had just been completed. For the first few years we
didn't have much of a problem then we replaced the roof and all the decking and discovered a considerable amount of
rot and water damage. We thought the new roof would fix that. However for the last twenty years we have fought a
roof leak in the back of our house. We have had several people look at it and have tried everything we can to fix the
leak while leaving the roof as is. We have come to the conclusion that this is not an option.
At this point, our house is considered a contributing structure to the neighborhood and of course we would like to keep
it that way. I have attached pictures of the front and back of the house and line drawings of the proposed new
roof. You will notice that the new roof will peak over the existing front roof line by almost 5 feet. I have seen this style
on countless other houses downtown so we "assumed" this would be ok until the question was asked at our hearing if
the changes would change our status. I appreciate you reviewing our materials and letting me know if these proposed
changes will change our contributing structure status.
