The proposed sign, to be located on the Southwest corner of 7th & South Rock
Streets, utilizes an existing sign structure, would be four (4') feet wide at the
base and less than six (6') feet high, tapering to a curve at the top. This
represents the Italianate top window detail of the house. The face of the sign
would have The Cherry House in the top curved portion and tenant signs
restricted to a space that would measure four (41 feet wide by three 0) feet
high, twelve (12) square feet. Each tenant name would utilize three (Y) inch
vinyl letters and be restricted to one line. The intent is to keep the
advertising portion of the sign within the required dimensions prescribed by
the Commission. Only the portion with The Cherry House on it would
exceed the existing requirements.
I have attempted to blend with, and compliment the historic nature of the
structure, as it is one of the most visible in the area. I have utilized approved
house colors, exclusively, and, as indicated, incorporated the hooded crown,
window detail into the design of the sign.
The location of the sign is the same as that of the previous sign, which is
actually a part of the new sign structure. It is well out of the traffic triangle
and appears not to be an obstruction for traffic at the intersection. It is in the
shade of the Magnolia tree (see picture) and does not scream at you as you
pass by.
I am not asking for a variance for the increase in company advertising space,
but rather the ability to name the historic structure without penalizing the
tenants. I also believe that the sign, although it is a sign, is an enhancement
to the property and the neighborhood.
