Re: Historic District Commission
Dear Mike:
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Quapaw Quarter
Association, thank you for the opportunity to comment on the plans
submitted by Allison Moses Redden for the restoration of the Welch -
Cherry House at 700 Rock Street and for the development of a parking
lot to be shared by the Welch -Cherry House and other buildings in
the block.
We have two minor concerns relating to the restoration plans
for the house. First, we would like to be certain that the
balustrades on the second levels of the western and southern porches
are compatible in materials and design with all the other balustrades.
(The drawings we have seen do not clearly indicate the treatment of
the upper level balustrades on the west and south.) Second, we
would prefer that large, undivided sheets of glass be used to
enclose the portions of the western and southern porches currently
shown as being enclosed by multi -paned windows.
With regard to the site plan, we believe that the proposal
represents a vast improvement over the current situation, both in
terms of the amount of parking provided and in terms of appearance.
Because our concerns are limited to relatively minor aspects
of the restoration of the Welch -Cherry House, we would recommend
that a Certificate of Appropriateness be issued for the project.
Sincerely,
Chery Griffith ichols
Executive Director
