According to county real estate assessment records, the house was built in the early 1880's (between 1880 and 1883) by James H. Sannoner, a prosperous "cotton factor and commission merchant." Mr. Sannoner had his own business, J. H. Sannoner & Co., at 609-615 Main St. He lived at 522 Rock Street until his death in the early 1900's (around 1901 or 1902, judging from city directory listings). His widow and children continued to live in the house until 1906 or 1907, when they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. The house evidently then became a boarding or rooming house and continued as such until recently. Although the Sannoner House has been greatly altered, and, in its current condition, has no particular architectural significance, it does have some historical significance --and, like the Kempner House across the street, it could be very attractive if rehabilitated. In compiling this information on the Sannoner House, I also came across the fact that the American Legion previously demolished a perfectly charming Queen Anne cottage that stood at 518 Rock St. This house, the Repetti Cottage, was a "Priority I" structure (see enclosed survey form). Obviously, the American Legion doesn'.t think much of historic buildings: Sincerely, h a-i Cheryl Griffith Nichols Enclosure Executive Director 1315 South Scott 0 P.O.
