Remnants of the stage's cur- tain hang in tatters, near the few remaining light fixtures in the mostly darkened theater. Pieces of plaster, brick and wood debris litter the floor. "This was a gem," Property Manager Mark Jernigan said as he walked over the rotting floor of what was once a gymnasium, in the now -shuttered building near downtown Little Rock. Developers and residents are ready to see the East Side Junior High School's auditorium build- ing reborn, three decades after its closure, but a battle is brew- ing over what form its rebirth should take. A nonprofit group's proposal to renovate the auditorium, at Cumberland Street and Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive; and turn it into 34 apartments is drawing opposition from several neigh- bors who say they'd rather see the auditorium preserved for community use.
