Dear Mr. Hiller:
Thank you for faxing a sketch of the fire stair proposed to be added to the rear of this house. After careful
review of the stair design, the National Park Service has determined that the addition of a rear stair
structure to this house will meet the Secretary of the Interior`s Standards for Rehabilitation, provided that
the design of the stairway is revised as follows:
This house is located on a comer and the rear elevation of the house is highly visible from the street.
Because the new rear fire stair will also be highly visible it is important that it be compatible with the
historic character of the house itself as well as with the character of the MacArthur Park Historic District.
The sketch you provided indicates that the stairway structure with a second story deck is very large. Not
only does the deck extend out 9 feet from the rear of the house, but the run of the stairs extends
approximately 12 feet (no exact dimensions are given) out from the rear of the house into the back yard. In
order to minimize the prominence of the stairway structure, the stairs should be redesigned so that they
turn at the landing at a right angle so that the lower portion of the stairs runs parallel to the rear elevation of
the house instead of extending out into the yard in a straight run (see enclosed sketch). In addition the size
of the deck should be reduced somewhat. Please provide us with a clear, revised drawing showing these
changes. The drawing must also show the design proposed for the railing balusters and the lattice work in
place. The stairway structure must be painted in a color that is compatible with the exterior of the house.

Preservation Office.
