PROJECT BACKGROUND, DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS: The first property, 309 E.
14th, is located south of I-630. The two -storied, brick structure is located on the south side of the
street and west of the alley between Rock and Cumberland streets. The structure is Craftsman
styled, ca. 1910 and listed as contributing in the district's architectural survey.
The property at 1401 Cumberland is located south of I-630, on the southeast corner of 14th and
Cumberland streets. It is a red brick two -storied apartments, recently purchased by the applicant.
The Queen Anne/Craftsman styled apartments were constructed ca. 1885. It is listed as
contributing in the MacArthur Park Historic District 1988 architectural survey
The 1978 architectural survey of the MacArthur Park and Governor's Mansion areas evaluated
the 1401 Cumberland structure as being level II of architectural significance, which contributes
to the area's character either visually or aesthetically. Both structures have been vacant either
partially or completely for several years and incurred damages to the roofs in the 1999 tornado.
NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACT AND REACTION: At the time of distribution, there were no
objections, by letter or phone, to the applicant's request.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION: It is staff recommendation that the request for storm
windows for 309 East 14th be approved.
It is staff recommendation that the request to install storm windows for 1401 Cumberland be
approved; also, the request to demolish the two -storied, rear (east elevation) addition be
approved on condition that the fire code required, secondary staircase be approved
administratively prior to installation.

Dear Angela,
This letter is in re ards to the above property. There is
an addition built on to he house that is not constructed by
any city codes. This adc ition is built with wood right on the
ground causing termite problems that will affect the rest of
the house. With this addition constructed like it is, there is
no way to guarantee th house from any future termite
damage.
I strongly recommend that this structure be torn down
and the porches and ba conies be restored like the house
was originally construe ed.
