HISTORIC RESTORATION
1001 CUMBERLAND STREET
LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project consist of performing major exterior restoration and interior reno-
vation to an existing wood frame, brick veneer, late 19th Century, Victorian era
structure.
This structure was orginally built around 1891 or 1892, as a private residence
for the Altenberg Family (see historical data enclosed). The historical
information gives an accurate description of the house prior to the start of
this project.
A. The purpose and intent of this project is to restore and revitalize the
building for private use. The principal element of the project and their
planned use are as follows:
- Existing painted brick will be re -painted a natural brick color similar
to the original color. All wood siding trim and lattice will be painted
complimentary and accent colors to provide a color scheme in character
with the Victorian design and the historical quality of the house. The
front porch will be restored in character with its original design.
- Re -roofing is not anticipated at this time, however, if funds are
available after other major work is complete, the building will be
re -roofed with composition shingles in a color resembling "slate" and
roof cresting reproduced in wood or metal will be put back on the roof.
- Wood siding on the rear of the building will be painted and some lattice
trim will be added along with an awning that will be replaced over the
rear entry door.
- The existing screened porch on the south side will be glazed -in on the
second floor and glass solarium is proposed for the first floor. The
solarium will be projected out approximately 8 feet, (see Exhibit B) and
will be surrounded by a wood deck with lattice rail and privacy fence.
- Privacy fencing will be proposed for the entire rear and side yard of the
property. The fencing consist of both lattice with trim and board fence
(see Exhibit B).
B. Construction started April 1, 1986 and is scheduled for completion by
September 30,1986.
C. 1001 Cumberland is located on the corner of loth Street and Cumberland, the
adjacent building to the south, is a one story wood -frame 4-plex office
building. The proposed solarium addition faces the north side yard of this
structure. The relationship of the site improvements to the adjacent
property is a good relationship in that it will create a softer edge for
the neighbors than that of the massive brick facade and screened porch that
soars up to 25 to 30 feet over the neighboring one story structure.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION (CONTINUED)
D. The anticipated impact of the project upon the neighborhood is very positive,
this project offers the following advantages:
1. Renovation and restoration to a significant structure which will help
to solidify the historic fabric of the neighborhood.
2. Save an hisotric home from becoming another boarding home, which was
its most recent use, except for a short period, that it was occupied
as an office.
