HomeMy WebLinkAboutHDC1998-019 Letter To Ann Gutherie LRHDC From Larry Gimnich 07/28/1998 Rec'D 07/31/1998July 28, 1998 Ann Gutherie Little Rock Historic District Commission 615 West Markham, Suite 100 Little Rock, AR 72201 Dear Ann Gutherie: I am writing regarding the upcoming public hearing to held on August 6, 1998. My wife, Lisa, my sons, Layne and Lincoln, and I are very opposed to a conditional use permit being granted to Second Baptist Church for a parking lot at 618 Rock Street and 619 Cumberland Street. We feel that paving a residential lot for parking would be contrary to what families like ours are trying to preserve in the McArthur Park historic district. You and the entire commission are well aware, that the oldest residential neighborhood in the Little Rock area is saturated with parking lots and businesses. Our neighborhood simply cannot bear the burden of losing another piece of land to asphalt. Also, as a property owner at 624 Rock Street, I feel that turning this land into parking would greatly depreciate the value of my home. Thank you for including this information in the meeting scheduled for August 6, 1998. P . 2/2 July 30, 1998 Ann. Guthrie Little Rock Historic Commission 615 w- Markham Street, STE 100 Little Rock, AR 72201 bear MS. Guthrie, 1 have received some information concerning the proposed conditional use permit for a parking lot at 619 Rock Street and my wife and 1 oppose this proposal due to our commitment to the Little Rock downtown area. While the Second Baptist Church is a vital part of the neighborhood, a parking lot is not. There is an abundance of parking lots currently in the area and a new one would defeat the purpose of all the work that has been done by the residents of the 600 block of Rock Street- i believe there are several homes that have been saved from demolition and have been beautifully restored, it would be a shame for all that effort to go to waste with a parking lot next door or across the street. if the Historic Commission elects to allow this property to become a parking lot where will it all end? The 6 years we have lived downtown the commission has done some excellent work and we appreciate the values it upholds for the history of this Little Rock neighborhood_ Please do not allow this property to suffer the fate that many others have and become a concrete slab to only be used on Sunday. If the property stays as it is there is the hope that someone can purchase it and either move a historic structure on the property or build one within the commission's guidelines. Please save the neighborhood. Sincerely, un Best 523 E. 7t° St - Little Rock, AR 72202 501-375-6295 JUL 30 '98 09:54AM LS&C4 FIELD TRANS.
