But on page 23 of the 1897 map, I'm pretty sure you see at 421 E. 9th St. (southwest corner of 9th and Commerce, facing 9th St.) the house that's now at 904-906 Commerce. On page 187 of Volume 2 of the 1913 map, the house is in its current location (and has lost a side porch and gained a little addition at the rear). Also on the 1913 map, the existing 2-story house at 900 Commerce has been built on the corner lot. In other words, sometime between 1897 and 1913, the house was moved south a lot or two and turned to face Commerce, making way for new construction on the corner. This solved a mystery for me. The house looks like it originally was built in the late 1880s or early 1890s, but it doesn't show up on the Sanborn map that early -- until you see it in a slightly different location. Cheri P.S. Because of the configuration of the window panes, I suspect the existing windows date from the early 20th century, maybe when the house was moved -- but that doesn't mean they should be replaced with vinyl ones now!
