Re: Restoration of Colonial Revival House at 1016 Commerce (known as
the Lewis House) r
The purpose of this submission Is to request permission to move the
unoccupied Colonial Revival (ca. 1906) house from its current location at
1016 Commerce to a double lot at I801 Gaines. It is my intention to
restore this house and create a turn -of -the -century garden around it (see
preliminary diagram). The house, at its current location, is being
considered for demolition. If it is not razed, it is unlikely that It
will be restored and will be allowed to continue to fall into disrepair.
Relocating this house is a reasonable solution for saving it..
Relocating the house will involve only removing the roof. The
relocation of the house and Its restoration would begin as soon as
approval from this Commission and the Capitol Zoning -Commission is granted.
Once the house is relocated, it has been estimated that it will take
approximately ninety (90) days to draw the project to completion. The
foundation and new roof will have to be done immediately upon relocation.
Additional changes to the property will include a covered walkway from the
back of the house to a proposed garage. This addition is for security and
convenience. The property will be completely enclosed with three styles
of fencing: a six-foot brick wall along the alley, a brick, and picket
fence along 18th Street and Gaines Street; and a privacy fence along the
south property line. The fencing, like the house, will be painted colors
that would have been used at the turn of the century. I am proposing an
auxiliary building to function both as a tool shed and as a garden
feature. Both the tool shed and the garage will be constructed from
materials similar to those used in the house.
The relocation of this house at 1801 Gaines and Its proposed
turn -of -the -century gardens will make a positive impact on this particular
area of the Quapaw Quarter.
