MEMORANDUM
TO: HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION
FRO IM LAWSON, DIRECTOR OF PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
SUB CT: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON CURRAN HALL PARKING LOT
DATE: July 26, 2001
Jim Lawson
Director
The staff has done some additional research for the proposed Curran Hall parking lot. We
contacted Tracy Kimberlin from the City of Springfield, Missouri, that has a similar Information
Center. Below are our findings:
* Location: Off of Highway 65 (see enclosed map) Highway. 65 is a main route
through Springfield.
Visitors: 65,000-80,000 per year. In the year 2000 there were 65,000 visitors.
Highest day has been 600 visitors.
■ Average Stay: Generally visitors are in and out.
■ Parking: Access for RV's is their biggest problem. A rough estimate might be that
5% of the visitors come by RV.
The staff has also determined some additional information on Curran Hall. This information is:
■ No. of Employees:
■ Hours of Operation:
• Number of Reception (events)
■ Number of People/event
■ Major Access to Center:
4 full time; 2 volunteers
10 hours/day 7 days/week
15-20 per year
25-50 people
From I-630 via 6"' street
Positive Impacts on the Historic District: Enhance public education of District by handing out
brochures on tours and structures.
Providing additional parking for residents of the
District.
Conversion of a vacant lot to a viable use.
Parking lot will get additional cars off of the streets
reducing congestion.
Tom Carpenter, the City Attorney will be sending a memo by separate cover which will describe
the differences between this case and the Second Baptist case. He has assured me that there are
significant differences between the two cases.
We have also enclosed a page from "Marketing Arkansas: The Bigger Picture" 2000-01
Arkansas Tourism Annual Report. This page shows the impact of travel on Pulaski County. It
again shows how significant tourism is to Little Rock and the State.
From that same report we have a page description of the travel to various state run Information
Centers you can see that the numbers are significant.
I hope this information will allow you to give the Curran Hall parking lot a favorable
recommendation.
Thank You
