a house has an orientation with the front of the house facing north, the best
placement of the dish, to work effectively, is to place the dish on the north side of
the roof, hence the front of the structure.
SUGGESTED TEXT OR POLICY:
(underlined text is new, st, iAk text is to be deleted-.)
Satellite dishes should never be installed 'n fFeRt yards or twrheFO wearily visible in
side yards on the front slope of the roof or where visible from any street.
Appropriate mounting locations are on the back slopes of roofs and on posts in
the rear yards.
COMMISSION DISCUSSION AND ACTION SYNOPSIS:
Debra Weldon made a presentation on the placement of satellite dishes in regard
to the FCC rules and regulations. After discussion and further research of Staff,
the proposed Language to replace all language on page 70, D. 4. After
discussion on February 9, 2008, the following text is suggested. Satellite Dishes
is a follows:
The locations of end user satellite dishes should not detract from the character
defining elements of individual structures or of the character of the neighborhood
since they are an element of a much later period than most structures in the
neighborhood. Satellite dishes should be installed where they are the least
obtrusive in location to preserve visual esthetics while maintaining reception
qualities. The satellite dish should not be visible from the street. Suggestions
are to mount them on rear or side slopes
of roofs, on posts in rear or side yards, on L3
fences or other places not visible from
street. When visible from the street, if
mounted under the eave of the house, the s
satellite dishes can be less obtrusive than ' C
on the roof. If visible from the street, they
should be painted with an exterior matte
finish non -lead based paint to match the
color of the background of the house.

reception. This part receives the reflected satellite beam and sends the signal to
your satellite receiver. The LNB or eye on your dish is located on the arm on
your dish just in front of your dish.
The graphic above will be added to the guidelines. A definition of satellite dishes

American Foursquare
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The American Foursquare or American Four
Square is an American house style popular from the
mid- 1890s to the late 1930s. A reaction to the ornate
and mass produced elements of the Victorian and
other Revival styles popular throughout the last half
of the 19th century, the American Foursquare was
plain, often incorporating handcrafted "honest"
woodwork (unless purchased from a mail-order
catalogue). This style incorporates elements of the
Prairie School and the Craftsman styles.
The hallmarks of the style include a basically square,
boxy design, two -and -one-half stories high, usually
with four large, boxy rooms to a floor, a center
dormer, and a large front porch with wide stairs. The
boxy shape provides a maximum amount of interior
room space, to use a small city lot to best advantage.
Other common features included a hipped roof,
arched entries between common rooms, built-in
cabinetry, and Craftsman -style woodwork.
A typical design would be as follows: First floor,
from front to back, on one side, the living room and
dining room; while on the other side, the entry room

or foyer, stairway and kitchen. Sometimes a
bathroom was also included. Second floor, front to back, on one side, bedroom, bathroom and bedroom;
while on the other side, bedroom, stairway and bedroom. The bedrooms had a slightly longer dimension
along the front and back of the house with side by side closets between the bedrooms. This gave a very
efficient layout with a bedroom In each corner-and-4 centralized bathroom and stairway. The top floor
was generally just a big open space with one to four dormers. The basement generally contained a large
natural convection furnace.

models include built-in shelves and other amenities. Large tracts of these homes exist in older urban
neighborhoods, particularly streetcar suburbs, but the design was used everywhere.
As with other styles in streetcar suburbs, it was tailored to relatively narrow lots, and was multi -story,
allowing more spare -footage on a small fpvt; The American Foursquare style is occasionally
revived in new developments, although its appeal is as a "traditional looking" style rather than a fully
authentic one, often including modern 2-car attached garages and other features absent in originals, and
typically built on larger lots.
History
The American Foursquare or "Prairie Box" was a post -Victorian style, which shared many features with
the Prairie architecture pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright. Many Foursquares are trimmed with tiled
roofs, cornice -line brackets, or other details drawn from Craftsman, Italian Renaissance, or Mission
architecture. Later Foursquares often had the same type of interiors as Bungalows with open floor plans,
lots of built-ins, and fireplaces.
Mail-order era
The Foursquare was a popular mail-order era style
along with the California bungalow. When one was
ordered, it came in a boxcar with a book of
directions and all the parts pre-cut and numbered for
self -assembly. These homes are particularly
common inn-neighborhoodsnear rail -lines built in
th is era. The 'largest mail-order house catalogue
companies were Sears and Aladdin.

PaulPageDwellings, proposes to build two small affordable homes facing 15t' street
between Cumberland and Rock Streets. These homes represent the ideas of sustainability,
but will take their scale, style, and features from the past. We want to be innovative, but
restrained, so that the homes can be attainable to first time homeowners. Using existing
infrastructure, on a marked bike trail and public bus route linked to the award -winning
MacArthur Park Masterplan and SoMa Design Plans we will continue to create a
traditional neighborhood. These sustainable, economically viable homes will continue to
build on the neighborhoods diversity and inclusive desires of those living nearby. We
want to continue to build a walkable neighborhood.
Sincerely,
