SUBJECT: MacArthur Park Restroom
This memorandum serves as notice that the old restrooms in MacArthur Park, having sustained
substantial structural damage due to the 1999 tornado, required demolition due to their severe
condition. The old restrooms were constructed prior to the establishment of the historic district
and the related design review guidelines. As such, the exterior of the old restrooms did not reflect
the intention and purpose of both the city ordinance and the design guidelines for the historic
district. The design review guidelines, which were approved in 1994, require that a facade reflect
particular aspects in its exterior construction in terms of massing, pitch, elevation, materials, etc.
Due to these considerations, the old restrooms could not be rebuilt as they did not meet the
design guidelines for new construction in the MacArthur Park Historic District.
