Markham Street, #120 W Little Rock, AR 72201 Subject: Letter of Application Ref: Application for Certificate of Appropriateness Dear Commission Members Please consider this as Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the addition of a doorway to the north facade of an existing commercial building located at 402 East Ninth Street, Little Rock, Arkansas. The proposed project consists of addition of a double doorway to the rem facade (north) for the purpose of enabling access to the building's interior for oversized art and antiques. The building is currently unoccupied and the proposed new tenant, Cowden Art Conservation, wishes to utilize the space as an art conservation studio. Objects to be conserved commonly include art and antique mirrors requiring a doorway approximately twice the size of the existing single doorway located in the front facade of the building. The rear facade, shown in Attachment 1, faces a gravel parking lot immediately east of Rock Street and is of solid brick construction. Existing brick will be removed to allow addition of double wooden doors in a design consistent with the initial building construction period of ca. 1910-1920. Following brick removal, a steel reinforcing header will be installed, wooden door jambs and sill installed, brickwork in -filled with salvaged original brick, and painted wooden doors installed. Doors will be wood construction in keeping with cargo door design from the original construction period, similar to Attachment 2. Attachment 3 depicts a similar doorway located in a secondary facade of a ca. 1900-1910 brick commercial building located at 318 East 11`" Street. A poured concrete pad will provide transition from the building to the parking lot. A grassed strip approximately two feet wide separates the rear facade and the parking lot. The poured concrete, interior floor is located approximately two brick courses above the exterior soil surface. The proposed change does not affect existing building foundation, windows, doors, roof, or details. Construction on this project will commence after issuance of a Certificate of Appropriateness and will be completed within 30 days. Cowden Art Conservation was established in 1975 in Benton, Arkansas and provides restoration and conservation services for art and antiques. Clientele includes local museums, interior designers, antique dealers, and private collectors. Approval of this request will enable a stable, long-term business to locate in the MacArthur Park Historic District.
