Hi Brandon,
In this case, since this would be considered ordinary maintenance and not a replacement of a historic material
with a substitute material, the color of the architectural shingles is not regulated. The replacement of composite
shingle for architectural shingle is appropriate.
Before you start work on your project, make sure to complete Page 5 of the COA application, attached here, and
return to me. A filing fee is not required since this work can be administratively reviewed. You will need an
approved and signed certificate before your contractor can start work.
Thanks,

Below is a picture, i believe it is architectural style. We are looking for a color that has more red to get the
closest match to the current shingle. There is no other work be done but basic update of shingles. Is this
color and style acceptable if no other color is available?

Good morning, Brandon,
No trouble reaching out! Always happy to assist. The MacArthur Park Design Guidelines
address residential roofs in specific on pages 17-18, attached here. Before your contractor
starts work on your roof, you or your authorized agent will need to apply for and be issued a
Certificate of Appropriateness. Depending on the scope of work, this project can likely be
reviewed administratively and without a public hearing. Administrative review typically is a
turnaround of one day from when a complete application is filed. If you are proposing to
reroof with composite shingle or architectural shingle this can be administratively
reviewed since it is considered ordinary maintenance. If you are proposing, for example, to
make major alterations to the roof form, remove or replace architectural features, remove
or add dormers, or replacing with a different material like metal, clay tile, or slate, the
proposed changes would be considered alterations and would require review by the
Historic District Commission at a public hearing.
What scope of work and materials are you considering, and I can better assist?
Thanks,

I hate to bother you but I am having my roof replaced and can't seem to find the color and
style requirements for the Butler House in the guidelines. Any chance you can guide me in
the right direction?
Sincerely,

Apologies, not No. 2 Pine, but cedar or cypress.
