DEAR PLANNING DEPARTMENT,
My husband Mark Murphy and I are longtime residents of Little Rock and are applying for a variance that would allow us to add a 4-foot-wide deck-like walkway (a.k.a., boardwalk or catwalk)
along the south side of our house, at the second-floor level, from Alberta Drive to our back deck.
Our residential lot slopes down from the front yard, but since the deck is on the second floor, there will be only a very small amount of change in elevation from end to end of the walkway.
We are in our late 60’s and our carport is on the north side of the house accessing the lower floor. To carry groceries from the car to the kitchen involves walking from the carport
to the middle of the house, then up two sets of stairs (with a split front entry landing between the sets of stairs), then to the south end of the house to the kitchen.
But if we add this walkway, we and any guests will be able to walk straight from the street or front of the yard to the back deck, which has a double door to the kitchen on the west
side of the house. Next to the walkway heading toward the deck from the front yard is a kitchen window that we can convert to a door for even shorter access directly to the kitchen.
We will include handrails and a security gate. We have several friends for whom stairs are difficult, and this access will enable much easier visits. We plan to be at this home for many
more years, so we plan to benefit very much from this one-level access as well.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Feel free to call with any questions.
Sincerely,
Candice Murphy
