Dear Staff and Commissioners:
Thank you for your time and attention in examining the Application for 516 E 8th St,the Johnson House.
We propose to remove the current steps,rebuild to the current code with the width and height of treads and
risers,and add back the handrail with balustrades.The handrail will be lowered to the current code.
The current code for residential stairs includes the following:
The top of the handrail must be within 34-38”,the riser cannot exceed 7 ¾”,the minimum stair tread is 10”,and
stairs cannot differ more than 3/8th of an inch,spindles cannot be more than 4”apart.
Finishing details include post caps and spindles replicating those restored on the porch perimeter-see attached
photos.The spindles will be approximately 1 ½”x 1 ½”-2”x 2”,made from wood.
We believe that the Johnson Houses will greatly improve the appearance,history,and walkability of 8th Street
once completed.
