Staff Anal sis: The owners of the new Cajun's Wharf at 2400 Cantrell Road have recently placed an "architectural element" designed to look like the bow of a fishing boat on the front fagade of the restaurant. The sail of the boat is proposed to be used as a sign for the restaurant. The structure does not meet the ordinance criteria for signs in that it is not mounted on the vertical surface of the building and it extends above the roof of the building. Staff is supportive of the requested variance. The applicants have invested over 1 million dollars in renovating and "bringing back" what was at one time the November 29, 1999 Item No.: 2 (Cont. C. leading restaurant in the state. The "architectural element" is an integral part of the atmosphere being created for the restaurant. Cajun's Wharf is located at the rear of an office -warehouse complex. The sign is not readily visible from Cantrell Road and serves no real purpose in directing customers to the site. The previous occupant, Landry's, had a large, marquee sign located in this same area, although it did not extend above the roof. Staff does not believe that allowing the sign will negatively impact other businesses or properties in the area. Staff Recommendation: Staff recommends approval of the requested variances to allow the Cajun's Wharf sign on the architectural element as presented.
