Chairman Brooks and Board Members,
On April 1, 1998, the River Market Design Review Committee (DRC) met to discuss the
recommendation for three projecting signs located at 301-307 East Markham. The DRC voted to
recommend a waiver of the height requirement of the signs and to recommend a waiver of the
number requirement of the signs. The vote was 4 ayes and 1 absent. The additional three signs
are to have no artwork or copy on them. The owner understands he will be required to appear
before the DRC to get approval of the artwork and copy. The DRC had also approved that a
franchise permit be issued before a sign permit can be issued. The DRC members look forward
to working with the Board of Adjustment members on protecting the visual integrity of the
district.

As owner of a multi -tenant, two-story property in the River Market District it is
important that each tenant have his/her individual sinage in order to visually
advertise their location in the building. Second floor tenants find it especially
frustrating and a hardship if not allowed to have sinage indicating their place of
business. Without sinage, they lose business and clientele. For these important
reasons we are requesting a variance to allow for three additional signs beyond
the one per one hundred linear feet that is currently allowed.
When we were faced with this problem we consulted the River Market Design
Review Committee and asked for their advice and recommendations. They
responded that they felt that the additional sinage would not detract from the
district (as long as it matched what we have designed) but in fact would show an
excitement and vitality in the district. We hope that you will concur and grant
our variance.
