United Parcel Service Distribution Center United Parcel Service Distribution Center and LLWAS tower No Public Works Comments relative to this issue B. Staff Analysis: Recent expansion of the Little Rock National Airport has rendered the existing Low Level Windshear Alert System inadequate for the current runway configuration. The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed relocating the LLWAS antennae to provide complete runway coverage as well as increasing the height of the towers to improve the reliability of information provided. January 8, 1996 Item o. 2 (Cont.) LLWAS Site 2 is currently located north of the airport, on the south bank of the Arkansas River. The LLWAS equipment is currently mounted on a 20 foot tall wood pole. Under this proposal, the LLWAS site would be relocated to a 25 foot by 25 foot lease area on the eastern half of the United Parcel Service property at 5501 Fourche Dam Pike. The equipment would be mounted on a 150 foot tall, monopole tower. A variance is requested to allow for the construction of the 150 foot tall tower. Section 36-201 (the tower ordinance) limits steel, ground -mounted towers to 75 feet in height and Section 36-320 limits structures to a height of 45 feet in the I-2 District. The FAA has reviewed the proposed location and height for the LLWAS. As proposed, the LLWAS will provide the required runway coverage necessary for airline safety. As this is an issue directly related to the health, welfare and safety of the population; staff is supportive of the variance request. C.
