A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND VISIT! Ff]he development of Little Rock's Hillcrest neighborhood dates back to the late nineteenth century. The first homes were built here around 1890 by a group of businessmen from Michigan, who set out to develop the city's first real suburb. But growth in the neighborhood, which sits just northwest of Little Rock's central business district, did not truly begin until around 1903 when a streetcar line was installed, linking the neighborhood with the bustling city. The trolley line traveled via Markham Street to Stift's Station, where it branched off to begin a zig-zagging course up Kavanaugh {originally called Prospect Avenue). It brought with it a period of growth and expansion that made Hillcrest one of the city's most popular neighborhoods. The area attracted a fairly diverse population. Its early residents ranged from families of modest means to affluent professionals who had embraced the idea of establishing a "country" residence just minutes from the city. The street car line played an integral part of neighborhood life until 1947, when post-war suburban development began catering to the automobile. Some of the steel electrical poles the trolley cars used are still in place along Kavanaugh today with their hooks and cords intact. A few sections of today's Hillcrest neighborhood were originally part of the city of Pulaski Heights, which incorporated in 1905 but consolidated with Little Rock in 1916. Unlike many older neighborhoods across the nation, Hillcrest has never gone through a period of major decline. The neighborhood has experienced changes, such as large old homes giving way to apartment buildings, but it has retained in large measure a pleasant charm and historic character unequalled in any other neighborhood within the city. In addition to a unique array of stately turn of the century homes and quaint cottages of 30s and 40s vintage, another important aspect of neighborhood life is an abundance of parks with unusual nature traits. Allsopp Park literally twists through the neighborhood and is comprised of two steep ravines and several high THIS MAP IS A PROJECT OF HILLCREST RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 251121, Little Rock, AR 72225 promontories where visitors can enjoy scenic vistas of downtown Littie Rock and the Arkansas River. The ravines were deeded to the city by the original developers of the neighborhood, who believed the rough terrain was an impediment to any development. 0 n frequently repeated piece of Hil€crest lore concerns a steel suspension foot bridge across the south ravine. The bridge was built in 1946 to provide neighborhood residents a direct path to a streetcar stop on Kavanaugh Boulevard. Although use of the font bridge rvatirr€ Ir+ng ago, its enormous concrete supports remain hidden inthe ravine, surprising trail walkers who happen upon one of them. There are picnic areas, a ball field, tennis courts and other recreational attractions within Allsopp Park. However, most of it remains a natural woodland enjoyed by hikers and those fortunate Hilicre9t residents whose homes overlook the ravines. Picturesque Knoop Park also has become a popular neighborhood attraction since its official dedication by city officials in 1989. blamed after Former Littie Rock Mayor Werner Knoop and his wife Faith Yingling Knoop, the park is located on a wooded hill overlooking the city. The park has paved pathways, attractive rock -walled vistas, and picnic areas. The Hillcrest neighborhood today offers a quality of life unmatched elsewhere in the city. There's an abundance of unique and trendy small shops and boutiques operated by friendly proprietors who welcome and value your business. They are predominantly located along meandering Kavanaugh Boulevard, many in former residences that have been imaginatively restored, or in contemporary buildings that blend with their adjoining neighborhood. Several businesses also can be found just off West Markham Street, which forms the neighborhood's southern boundary. Also contributing to the neighborhood's vitality is a wide array of churches, schools, professional offices and services. Over 5,000 friendly neighbors complement and complete the neighborhood's attraction as a great place to live or visit.
