PROPOSED NEW EDUCATIONAL BUILDING
CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH
LITTLE ROCK. ARK.,
•:1
Together We Have A Challenge
The total cost for our proposed new Edu-
cational Building (Phase 1 of our Long
Range Building Program) will be approxi-
mately $800,000. God's word tells us to
strive for a more excellent way in our daily
busyness. We thank God for the lending
institutions which enable churches to build,
but we believe there is a more excellent way,
through the "Together We Build" Program.
The church is endeavoring to raise the total
$800,000 in 156 weeks. This is the only way
we can build at the present time and show
fiscal responsibility. However, if we reach
our Challenge Goal of $1,400,000 we will
construct Phase 2 of our Long Range Build-
ing Program (a new family life center).
Our Hallelujah Goal includes funds for the
construction of a new worship center. The
dollars we give now will allow us to save
many dollars in interest, build before we
otherwise could, and provide the facilities to
aid us in carrying out our mission.
NOT EQUAL WING...
BUT EQUAL SACRIFICE
Financial resources vary widely from mem-
ber to member. For this reason the call is
not for equal giving but for equal sacrifice.
By sacrificing, we will not only meet the
present needs of our church but we also will
be blessed in spiritual growth that comes
from seeking His will and following Him.
THE CANVASS
The canvassers will visit each church fam.
ily in November during the canvass period.
They will be able to answer any questions
You may have about the financial plans for
Calvary Baptist Church or the "Together We
Build" program. Your decision to partici.
pate will be made in your home and what
you determine to be your response will rest
entirely with your family and the Lord.
The canvasser is there to answer questions
you may have. Most families find that it is
easiest to meet their commitment if it is
given on a weekly basis; however, you may
give in a manner that best suits your family.

My dear People:
The Bible makes plain God's intention from the beginning to use
people to reach other people in order to carry out His plan of redemp-
tion here on earth. The participation of the people in thebuilding
of the Tabernacle and the Temple in the Old Testament, Jesus' use of
people in His ministry, and the Great Commission all remind us of
this great principle.
The Lord has proved this principle in the life of this church.
The present facilities have been provided by the cooperative effort
of concerned people of.God. NOW OUR FACILITIES ARE FULL!
God has chosen to locate our church in the heart of opportunity
to reach many people with the Gospel. We have a responsibility to
reach out. Because we care about those around us, because we love the
Lord, and because we want to serve Him through our church, we must
work together to build for His glory.
With God's help we can provide the funds needed for adequate
facilities of ministry. Remember, the theme is "EQUAL SACRIFICE...
NOT EQUAL GIFTS..." for a period of 156 weeks. We cannot all give
the same, but all can give alike!
We know that God makes possible the accomplishing of this goal
and much more. I challenge you to join me in prayerful appraisal of
what Christ would have each of us do regarding a weekly sacrificial
gift for our "Together We Build" program.
Yours in His service,
I-P

History Of Church
Calvary Baptist Church, originally a mission of Pulaski
Heights Baptist Church, was formally organized as a
full-time church in March, 1937, with 42 charter mem-
bers.
Under the direction of Dr. L. M. Sipes of Pulaski
Heights the mission was organized.
Meetings were held in the homes of Mrs. R. G. Taylor
and Mrs. Earl Farmby.
A number of moves were made in the two-year period
from 1935 to 1937. The final move was to a building at
Kavanaugh and N. Grant Street.
It was in this building that West Calvary Baptist
Church was born as a full-time church.
The membership called the Rev. Otto Sutton as the
pastor. Brother Sutton assumed the pastorate on July 1,
1937.
In 1939, the membership voted to drop the "West.'
from the name of the church to Calvary Baptist Church.
During Bro. Sutton's pastorate all phases of the
church program were strengthened.
An ambitious building program was started in 1939
when members of the church, headed by G. A. Casey,
constructed a fine frame sanctuary seating 250. With
the members doing most of the work the church build-
ing cost only $7,500.
In February,1945, Bro. Sutton resigned to accept the
pastorate of Valence Street Baptist Church in New
Orleans. Rev. J. F. Queen was named interim pastor.
To succeed Bra. Sutton, the church called Rev. P. J.
Crowder, who assumed the ministerial assignment in
June, 1945. He delivered his first sermon July 1 of the
same year. Bro. Crowder remained at Calvary for two
years. He resigned in July,1947, to accept a similar post
at Oak Grove Baptist Church at Fort Smith.
The Rev. Wilbur Herring accepted Calvary's call for
the ministry in October, 1947. Under his able guidance
a meri s Sunday School class building was erected by
the men of the church.
In April, 1951, Bro. Herring resigned to enter the
evangelistic field. Thomas Landers was named as inter-
im pastor.
The church called the Rev. Lawson Hatfield as pastor
on July 15, 1951. Under Bro. Hatfield's capable leader-
ship, the church completed construction of the Educa-
tional Building. A two-story frame structure (Calvary
House) was donated to the church by the Kroger Com-
pany for use as a Sunday School and Training Union
meeting place.
Bro. Hatfield resigned in September, 1954, to accept
the pastorate of First Baptist Church at Fordyce, Arkan-
sas.
On December 1, 1954, the church called Bro. Riley
Munday as its pastor to succeed Bro. Hatfield. He
preached his first sermon in January, 1955.
On December 26, 1955, excavation work was begun
on a new auditorium.
On June 3,1956, Rev. Munday resigned the pastorate
and was subsequently called to the pastorate of the
newly formed Kingwood Baptist Church.
Rev. Paul Fox was called as pastor in April,1957. After
5 years of fruitful service he resigned January, 1963, to
assume the pastorate of Lakewood Baptist Church,
Huntsville, Alabama. During his ministry, plans for the
new Educational Building were made and construction
begun.
Rev. Emil Williams was called as pastor from the First
Baptist Church, Russellville. He assumed the pastorate
in the spring of 1963. He resigned in 1964 to become
pastor of the First Baptist Church, Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Dr. Padgett Cope was called as pastor in the summer
of 1966. He resigned after nine fruitful years to become
pastor of the First Baptist Church, Indianapolis, Indiana.
The church called Dr. Phil Lineberger to become
pastor, and he assumed the pastorate June 8, 1975.
Under the ministry of Dr. Lineberger, the church expe-
rienced excellent growth and the front of the building
which houses the worship center was remodeled. Dr.
Lineberger resigned in December of 1979 to become
Pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Wichita, Kansas.
On June 29, 1980, the church called Dr. Clyde Glaze-
ner to become pastor. During the ensuing months
Calvary has been about the business of outreach and
plans for providing more space to reach more people
through Bible study and worship.
