Just being able to say that the initiative is active and in the coming years could bring a coveted designation is wonderful. Please feel free to reach out to me for any information Little Rock-wise. We are in the beginning stages of the process to get the LOD established, and our timeline looks to be in the late fall/early winter. I can update you on the end result at that time so that you can include it in the nomination if it is successful. Thank you for the information! Dear Hannah, How wonderful to hear that the local HD district nomination is moving forward, congratulations! You may indeed mention that Central High School is one of the sites proposed for the World Heritage serial nomination of U.S. Civil Rights Movement Sites. We anticipate that the boundaries of the World Heritage site will be those of the easement on Central High (main building an front landscaping), while the rest of the campus and the National Historic Site will serve as its buffer zone. Having the surrounding neighborhood protected by a local historic district will only increase the strength of Central’s part of the nomination. Besides providing real protection it also testifies to the neighborhood’s and City’s appreciation of its heritage. 2 RE: a timeline, I sure wish I could be specific but the nomination is a long complicated process with many of the steps beyond our control. The process involves several rounds of review and each has national and international components. That being said, do know that we are still working on this effort and expect to be funded through September 2024. The nomination itself is in good shape and should be ready to launch by then but I cannot predict where we will be in the process. I hope that helps. Best, Anne Anne H. Farrisee <afarrisee@gsu.edu> Subject: Little Rock: World Heritage sites nomination Good morning Ms. Farrisee, My name is Hannah Ratzlaff and I’m the historic preservation officer for the City of Little Rock. I’m fairly new to the job— 9 months—and my boss just informed me of the initiative taken on by Georgia State University for the GSU World Heritage Civil Rights Movement Sites. The City of Little Rock is in the process of proposing the creation of a local ordinance district for the Central High Neighborhood Historic District, which would provide further protection to the historic residential and commercial structures surrounding Central High School and Arkansas Baptist College. When presenting this proposed LOD to multiple City commissions, I would love to mention that two sites within the district are being nominated as World Heritage sites. This would go a long way for both our Planning Commission and our Board of Directors. I know this is a long process for your team, but to do have an estimate of the consideration timeline and is this still an active effort for all the Little Rock sites on your list? Little Rock Central High School Arkansas Baptist College Daisy Bates House Philander Smith College I appreciate your time and your efforts!
