Karen De Jarnette Director, Square One Gallery (501) 663-8330 • 5600 Kavanaugh Blvd., Suite #7 • Little Rock, Arkansas 72207 -The City Beautiful Commission February 24, 1992 Dear Mr. Carpenter, We, the members of the City Beautiful Commission would like to compliment you and your staff for the time spent in developing virtually single-handedly a zoning ordinance for hazardous waste and medical waste incinerators. Public concern for the environment has begun shaping legislation at all levels of government; local; state and federal. We at City Beautiful, share your concern as well as that of our Board of Directors, that Little Rock not be left behind. Our purpose as the City Beautiful Commission can be summarized in our Foreword to new members, which reads as follows: Our environment in Little Rock is our greatest asset. In one way or another it is the reason we came here, or we stayed. Our physical surroundings affect us daily, whether it be a breathtaking view of the river or the maddening frustration of driving on streets lined with power poles and gaudy signs. The problem of fighting ugliness and preserving the gifts of nature are not insurmountable, but they are painful. The Commission's job is to educate with patience those who are unaware of the things which make our City a better place to live, work and play. 500 West Markham, Room 108 Little Rock, AR 72201 371-4770 We understand that the Little Rock Neighborhood Coalition and Sierra Club's input has been sought by the City Attorney's office for inclusion into a city-wide environmental review ordinance to be brought before the City Board in 60 to 90 days from the January 21, 1992 City Director's meeting. In regard to this request for input, we ask that the City Beautiful Commission, too, be included in helping to shape this environmental review ordinance. Please contact our secretary, Becky Switzer or myself with initial meeting dates and locations. We look forward to working with the City Attorney's office in shaping the future of Little Rock's environment. Sincer y, MerliJ eeamon, n Chairman L.R.
