HomeMy WebLinkAboutCBC 08-13-1991(2)The City Pedutiful Commission The City Beautiful Commission held its regular meeting Tuesday, August 13, 1991 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 1-D of the University Conference Center. Merle Seamon, vice chairman, presided Members Present: Jim vonTungeln Steve Cato David Porter Ross McCain Shalah Brummett Merle Seamon Jo Rancifer Also Present: GayleOwens, Admin. Asst. Parks & Recreation Bob Brown, Neighborhood & Planning Dept. 1, Roll Call. 7 of 9 present. 2. Approval of minutes of July meeting. Minutes were approved as submitted. 3. Reports of Committees: A. City Beautiful Kids. Merle announced that the City Beautiful Kids Program was complete for 1991. This year the kids picked up 179.5 tons of trash. Approximately 70 of the 120 kids went to the remediation class sponsored by the Little Rock School District. Steve Cato moved that the,City Beautiful Commission continue to sponsor the City Beautiful Kids Program for 1992. The motion was seconded by Ross McCain and the vote to continue the program was unanimous. B. Capitol Avenue. Ross McCain reported that the committee had held a lunch meeting on August 6. The committee decided that the Parks and Recreation Dept. staff should send out requests for RFD's and form a review committee. Ross reminded the Commission 500 West Markham, Room 108 Little Rock, AR 72201 371-4770 Minutes of the August 1991 meeting page 2 members that there is only $400,000, some of which will be used for fees and some for construction. He also said that he didn't foresee any other meetings for a while. C. Downtown Streetscape. Merle reported that the committee had met. It was decided that an Adopt A Block program should be initiated. Merle also said that a grant request is being prepared for $10, 000. This nanstreetltreesable us to and to develops aastreetetree y of downtow management strategy. D. Diamond Center. Steve Cato reported on the progress of the Diamond Center Project. The Little Rock Board of Directors have called for a one-half cent sales and use tax for city operations and a one-half cent sales and use tax to finance bonds for the Project 2000 which includes the Diamond Center. Members of the commission discussed the project. Steve Cato moved that the commission send a letter to the Little Rock Board of Directors stating in general that the City Beautiful Commission supports the concept of both tax increases and the accompanying capital improvement items to be voted on October 8, 1991 and will follow with a position paper outlining specifins. David Porter reported that he had been in touch with the advertising agency for the Fight Dirty Campaign and that the material we had been led to believe was available was not available. He said he had also checked on the cost of television and radio dubs. Television dubs are $25 each and radio dubs are $10 each. 4. Landscape Awards. A Merle announced that Bill Bunten had been named the new director of the Parks and Recreation Department and we wholeheartedly congratulate him. 6. Adjournment. 11:45 a.m
