Greetings to the City Beautiful Commission.
I am in the process of trying to organize a model outdoor classroom to
teach hands-on gardening and community building skills to a portion of the
K-12 youth population of Little Rock. I would like to create a local
conservation corps which teaches self-worth along with its projects,
What I am asking from the City Beautiful Commission is a temporary legal
residence with you . I am applying for seed grants to develop and test my
concept, and I need to be working with a group with a tax-exempt status
to meet the requirements of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and
other possible funding sources.
I am currently working to identify the various local people interested in
this environmental education venture, and I am also writing a proposal for
a piece of a Federal block grant from the National and Community Services
Commission. This grant proposal, managed by the Governor's Office on
Volunteerism, is due March 23 in Washington DC. If granted, by late June
we could begin to create a city youth conservation corps whose first work
could be to build the gardens for this model outdoor classroom. Via this
project, a community youth corps could learn to build gardens for schools,
parks, housing projects, their own families, retirement homes, etc.
Your commission was recommended to me by Bill Bunten and it seems a
logical choice since I am negotiating with Bill and Little Rock Parks to
use the south end of Dunbar Community Center's land as a possible site for
this model outdoor classroom. I look forward to the possibility of working
with you and hope you will positively consider this request. Thank you.
Sincerely,
