Yes and no on closing your risers. You will need to close them enough so that a 4" ball cannot pass
between them. You may be able to install a 2x4 vertically underneath the riser at the front to reduce the
distance sufficiently. Or, you can close them totally, just don't reduce the total depth of the tread below
ill'.

Risers that are not in a rated stair enclosure can be open but the distance between treads on the back
has to be designed to prohibit a 4 inch ball from passing through.

On those stairs in the MacArthur park historic district (4plex rear stir reconstruction), can they have
open risers or do they have to close them in?

Yes, you should call between 8-9 am to 371-4832 to schedule an inspection. Usually, they can get
to you that day. I am asking about your closed or open risers. I should have an answer back to
you today on that.
thanks.

Here is the survey documents, it is in there. I have asked the code manager in my
office what, if any, will need to be done to the stairs to make them conform to codes.
The stairs are a life safety issue, but they will have to be to code on handrails, pitch,
etc. I will work with you and the building official to get these installed without having to
go though the public hearing process.

That is a life safety issue, so no public hearing will be needed.
Do you have a photo of the old stairs?

They were on the north side of the building on
the outside. The stairs came off the east side
of the second floor back porch to a landing
about half way down then moved over toward
the electrical panels and down toward the side
walk.

Our building at 524 East 6th had
a 2nd set of stairs on the back of
the building outside. The stairs
became unsafe and were taken
down. Now we are wanting to
rebuild the stairs.
I will be rebuild in the same
location with the same design.
Just wanted to check with you
to see if there is any thing we
need to clear with you first.
