You will need to close them enough so that a 4" ball cannot pass between them. You may be able to install a 2x4 vertically underneath the riser at the front to reduce the distance sufficiently. The stairs came off the east side of the second floor back porch to a landing about half way down then moved over toward the electrical panels and down toward the side walk. The stairs became unsafe and were taken down. Now we are wanting to rebuild the stairs. I will be rebuild in the same location with the same design.
