There being a quorum present, the meeting was called to order by the Chairman at
2:00 P.M. A motion was made for approval of the minutes of the last meeting as mailed,
which was seconded and passed.
This was a special meeting called by the Chairman for the purpose of considering the
following case: -
Tract No. 1 - Z-2322
Applicant: Arkan"s -Lighthouse for .the. Blind
Location. West 6.9th Street -at Murry Street
Description: Tract "X'° Little Rock Industrial District
Classification: "I" -Light Industrial District
Variance: Requests a Variance from the Yard Area Setback
Provisions of Section 43-16 of the Code of Ordinances
to permit construction in Yard Area Setback
The Staff recommended approval as there would be no blind corners at the intersection
of 69th and Murry Streets occasioned by this construction, which is a bus stop for
the use of the employees of the plant. There were no objectors.
Board of Adjustment Minutes -
December 1,1969
Rev. Jeff Smith, Superintendent of the Arkansas Lighthouse for the Blind was
present. The architects for the propo$ed addition, Messrs. Jim Jackson and
Eugene Levy, were present.
Mr. Smith gave a brief history of the organization stating that three years ago
Mr. Bill Graham built their half million dollar plant, funds for which were
acquired through public subscription. This business is staffed by blind persons
who manufacture and sell various products such as pillow cases, dust cloths,
brooms, etc. The building houses a chapel, cafeteria and auditorium. The blind
employees use the bus morning and evening for transportation to and from the plant,
and the pgoposed structure is a six -sided covered bus stop topped by a Afoot
bronze statue from Italy. Construction will be of brick and steel at a total
cost of $8,000. and will be 14 feet tall. A Variance was necessitated by the
intrusion of the new structure into the front yard space.
A moticxi was made fora royal as submitted, which was seconded and passed.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:15 P.M.
