Brian,
Thanks for your call this morning. I talked with Rick Parker in Gentry, AR. He has asked me to send him the sample
we collected from the cup that was used in the vandalism. He has offered to analyze it and recommend a treatment
plan. Per your approval, I will contact Allen Granite tomorrow and see about getting the base relocated pending
conservation. I look forward to seeing you Wednesday morning. Thanks.

Brian,
I have contacted David Harris with Light and Time Design Studio in Royal, Arkansas. They
did the bronze statues that were installed at the Arkansas Korean War Veterans Memorial in
2007 and perform annual maintenance on that memorial. Would he be acceptable to perform
an analysis? Also, what are the options for moving the granite pedestal off-site so that it does
not become a flashpoint for future vandalism/protests? We have used Allen Granite
Industries in North Little Rock for similar projects. Your recommendations?

Stephan -
We're sorry to learn that this monument was damaged. I think Paul was correct in saying that, in order to
clean it properly you'll have to have a good idea of what the offending material is. But I don't see this as a DIY
project. I'd suggest contacting a conservator for this. Norton Arts would be my first choice but you might also
ask one of the art conservators like Bryan & Devan Conservation here in Little Rock for referrals if they don't
do this kind of work. themselves The conservator world is fairly small in the state and I'm betting that
everyone knows one another and the work that they do.

I was also wondering if repair of this damage could be claimed under the city's insurance policy. Hopefully
that's the case.
Let us know if there's anything we may be able to help with.

Subject: Capitol Guard Memorial Vandalized
Brian and Brian,
I wanted to make you aware of vandalism that occurred today to the Capitol Guard Memo rial in front of the
museum. We've been able to determine that it occurred between 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. The substance
appears to be some sort of stain, varnish, or shellac. Fortunately, we had a contractor spraying our porches
for cleaning. I asked him to use a gentle spray to get as much of the substance off before it dried on the
granite base. As you can see, we were able to get the worst removed. Given the need for speed, I felt it
prudent to act at once and notify you as soon thereafter. I am available tomorrow to visit or talk about the
damage and various options to protect the memorial.
