I wanted to make you aware of vandalism that occurred today to the Capitol Guard Memorial
in front of the museum. We've been able to determine that it occurred between 11:15 a.m. and
12:45 p.m. The substance appears to be some sort of stain, varnish, or shellac. Fortunately, we
had a contractor spraying our porches for cleaning. I asked him to use a gentle spray to get as
much of the substance off before it dried on the granite base. As you can see, we were able to
get the worst removed. Given the need for speed, I felt it prudent to act at once and notify you as
soon thereafter. I am available tomorrow to visit or talk about the damage and various options to
protect the memorial.
