Parks & Recreation
This project involves the development of a Universal Accessible Playground for MacArthur Park
and MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History presented by L R Parks and Recreation and
the MacArthur Park Group. Together we have developed many of the parks features, such as, the
front lawn plaza, McMann Boulevard, the hostel, the dog park and the multi-purpose court. L R
Parks and Recreation will provide funding for the project through a Land & Water Conservation
grant and the MacArthur Park Group through fund raising.
This playground is a component playset with colorful elements and will be located southeast of
the museum building between the two existing parking lots. The parking lots will provide a
minimum of six accessible parking spaces with accessible walks to the playground. Approximately
48 additional parking spaces are available in the two parking lots.
The component playground is designed for children 5 to 12 years in age. The walks surrounding
the playground will provide access at grade to playground equipment or to ramps that provide
access to elevated playground platforms that lead to slides, climbing boards, overhead ladders
and other elements. The playground equipment includes sensory play equipment associated with
touch, sound and visual experiences in additional to gliders, swings, zip tracks and traditional
play equipment.
Shade structures cover much of the play equipment and seating areas. Fall shock resistant material
covers the ground around all the play equipment to absorb the force of falls. Low shrubs,
boulders and seating benches will surround the playground to control access points. Wayfinding
signage will be compatible with previous signage approved for the MacArthur Park.

Generally, the wish is to improve the park's appeal and provide an updated playground for
outdoor fun and activities to be enjoyed by families. The existing playground will be removed,
the ground leveled and seeded to provide open space for outdoor play within the existing
fencing. We appreciate this opportunity to work with the HDC and look forward to developing
a very useful project for community.
