Project Description
The purpose of this project is to extend the current 6’ tall privacy fence, enclosing the side yard
along the property line, and to add a 9th street facing gate. The fence will consist of a 55’ long
run down the length of the property and an 8’ long run parallel to 9th street that attaches to the
exterior garage wall. The gate will be 60” wide and centered in the 8’ section of fence.
The fence supports will be constructed of 4”x4”x8’ treated pine posts with horizontal 5/8”x5.5”x6’
cedar planks as the facade. The posts will be set approximately 24” deep every 6’, rest on a
bed of drainage gravel to prevent rot, and then set in concrete to ensure that they do not shift.
Centered between every set of posts will be a pressure treated 2”x4”x8’ pine board attached to
the cedar planks to prevent bowing with age. You will note the cedar planks listed below have
dog ears. These tips will be trimm ed off to allow for a clean horizontal application.
The gate frame will be constructed with 2”x4” cedar deck boards and a no sage gate frame kit.
The gate will then be attached with 3 10.24” self-closing hinges on the 9th street facing exterior,
creating an outward swing towards 9th street, in the same manner as the Cumberland facing
gate. The latch used will be mounted on the inside and have a key lock for security. This will
be entirely concealed from street view with a small knob resting near to top of the gate, to allow
for operation from both sides.
Once the redness has faded from the wood, it will be stained and sealed with the same Valspar
Pro tint and sealant used on the home to give a cohesive look.
Above is a picture of the existing, unstained, Cumberland facing gate and the stained siding.
The hinges on the 9th street gate will be embedded in the Cedar planks in the same way, to give
a clean look. During construction of the new gate the existing gate will get refreshed with the
same “no-sag” kit and stain listed below. The fence will have the same appearance and plank
spacing shown.
