So here’s my .02 on the subject. I do not recommend treated pine for the repair. It does not hold up well over the long term because it is a soft and porous wood that has a tendency to warp and eventually rot. I’ll bet the windows are made out of cypress or cedar. I recommend using one of those two wood species to rebuild the sill as they are both dense fiber woods that have rot resistant properties. I also recommend the use of an alkyd primer to paint all sides of the sill before installation and two coats of top coat once installed to protect it. Last, I would put a bead of masonry grade caulk/sealant at the base of it to keep water from seeping in under the sill and causing water damage to the window or wall beneath it. Please let me know if you have any questions. It seems to be the only window on the building that has this type of damage. Our windows have been painted shut for years, but we will try to cut through the paint and raise the window if possible for further inspection. The only rotting appears to have occurred on the sill. If this is the case, would you be OK with us custom fitting a piece of pressure treated pine to replace the sill? The sill is not visible from the ground, and we have not detected any water damage on the interior walls. Thanks for your assistance.
