Stephan –
I think it makes sense to add two more downspouts to the porch roof box gutter. That porch roof is draining all the
water from the back half of the upper roof plus the porch roof itself. I imagine those two existing downspouts get
overwhelmed fairly regularly. As long as the contractor can get the box gutter properly pitched toward the four
downspouts I see no problem with this approach.

Hi Stephan,
I forwarded your questions to Brian Driscoll as he is your reviewer on this grant project. Hope it all works out so you can
get the water drainage issue resolved!
Cheers,

Hey Paul,
We met with our contractor and architect this morning and a second option was presented to
help with drainage in the box gutter. It would involve installing two additional downspouts,
one at each corner, to assist with drainage. The two existing downspouts would be left in
place. Are either of these options acceptable to AHPP? I would be happy to discuss this more
fully at your convenience. Thanks so much for your assistance. The west porches are looking
great so far.

Subject: U.S. Arsenal Question Regarding Back Porch Downspouts
Paul,
Our contractor has asked us to consider relocating the two downspouts that drain the box
gutter on the Arsenal's back porch. As the attached photo from the 1920s indicates, there are
five downspouts that divert water from the roof, and two that handle water from the box
gutter. The downspouts in question are placed at the third columns from both the east and
west ends.
The contractor says these columns, rather than being shorter for proper drainage, are actually
the tallest. This has resulted in uneven drainage, allowing water to puddle and damage the
wood. According to our build specs, the column immediately to the east of the stairs is 3.5" to
4" shorter than the others, and already approved to be raised. The contractor feels that he can
raise that column enough to facilitate proper drainage the full length of the box gutter if he
can move the downspouts to the outside columns.
As you know, the columns and brackets on the back porch are the only original components
from when the porches were added in the late 1860s. If the downspouts are left in their
current location, the contractor says we will have to adjust the height on four columns, rather
than just the one shortest column referenced above, to obtain proper drainage. It seems to
me that the least disturbance to the columns, the better. Also, relocating the downspouts to
the corner posts should better divert water away from the building and the new air handlers,
which will be located midway under the porches on each side of the stairs.
Since this would be covered by the facade easement, I wanted to check with you before we
discussed it further. I talked with Brian Minyard today, and he says he can sign off on the
change is the state approves. Feel free to give me a call if you would like to visit more. Thanks
for your help.

Paul,
Are you free to visit by phone this afternoon or tomorrow morning about the downspouts on the back porch? I
have attached a 1925 picture of the Arsenal for your reference. Thanks.
