Re: 9th Street - Safe Streets Project
Mr. Lewno:
I am writing in regards to the 9th Street - Safe Streets Project. Our understanding is that the goal
of the Project is to improve safety for all forms of transportation, making inner city Little Rock a
safer place to ride, bike and walk. Saint Edward School is in full support of the Project.
Ninth Street is in the process of being added to the City of Little Rock bike Master Plan. The
proposed plan is similar to the plan recently implemented on South Main - In place of the current
4 lane configuration, it is proposed that the street be restriped to provide 3 lanes (a center turn
lane with a thru lane both directions) plus bike lanes. This plan has proven to reduce vehicular
speeds close to posted speed limits, improve crossing safety for pedestrians and promote buses
and bicycles as alternative forms of transportation. This is of particular interest to us, because
our students cross this street to MacArthur Park on a daily basis. Once completed, 9th Street will
become a safer street for members of the community who attend Saint Edward Church and
School, Arkansas Art Center and MacArthur Park. Also significant is the calming effect upon
traffic which will help bring the neighborhoods both sides of the street closer together. If
approved along with the Bike Master Plan, implementation will come following the current 3
year public works improvement plans.
I am happy to give my support to this project. Thank you.

Re: Daisy L. Gotson Bates Drive - Safe Streets Project
The Civil Rights Bike Trail
Mr. Lewno:
I appreciated the opportunity to meet with you and the representatives from Soma,
Ed Sergeant and Hillis Schild. Scheduled for next year, my understanding is that the
goal of the Safe Streets Project for Daisy L. Gotson Bates Drive is to improve safety for
all forms of transportation on one of the most important streets in our community.
Little Rock Central High School is in full support of the Project.
The project will involve resurfacing of the street from South Main to Central High
School. The street will be restriped changing the configuration east of Battery from 4
lanes to 3 lanes (a center turn Ione with a thru lane both directions) plus bike lanes.
West of Battery, the street is narrower so another configuration may be used and has
yet to be determined. Discussion included the use of "sharrows" graphics on the
street which remind drivers to share the road with bicyclists. When complete, this will
link similar street configurations on 12th Street and South Main.
The work must be complete while school is out for summer of 2014 starting the 2"d
week of June through the V week of August. As discussed, the City will work with us
regarding the schedule for the work.
We are also in support of the current plan for the Civil Rights Bike Trail. Please keep
us informed about i evelopment.

Dear Mr. Lewno,
I'm writing in support of the Safe Streets Projects for Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive and
Chester Street. The QQA supports the goal of the Safe Streets Projects to improve
safety for all forms of transportation. This will encourage smart growth and
neighborhood revitalization efforts in and around downtown Little Rock.
We understand the project will involve resurfacing and restriping the streets and
changing the configuration from four lanes to three with a center turn lane and bike
lanes. This approach has proven to reduce vehicular speeds, improve crossing safety
for pedestrians and promote public transit and bicycles as alternate forms of
transportation. The current volume of traffic is well below the limits of the three lane
configuration.
Once complete, Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive will create a significant link between
similar street configurations on 12th Street and South Main. Chester will become a
safer street for members of the community who attend Gibbs Magnet Elementary,
Dunbar Magnet Middle School, Dunbar Community Garden, Dunbar Community
Center and Williams Library. Thank you for your dedication to the City of Little Rock,
please let me know if the QQA can do anything to assist with this project.
Sincerely,
Rhea Roberts
Executive Director
