I apologize for not getting back to you earlier, but I do have it on my list to begin looking into Complete Street standards for transit. I have a few recommendations off the top of my head, listed below, but will get back to you by early next week if additional comments are warranted. Again, thank you for reaching out to CATA. All the Best, Matthew • CATA's standard fixed route bus is 102" wide (8.5 ft) so driving lanes need to accommodate this width. There are several areas in Little Rock that barely meet this standard, and with sloping roads toward curbs and overhanging tree branches, it can be difficult to maneuver. ■ NLR on Bishop Lindsey from Main to the 1-30 frontage road just constructed landscaped medians. They had to reconstruct some and make them shorter at street intersections due to the turning radius of our buses making right and left turns at these intersections. Therefore, ample turning space at intersections for buses turning left and right need to be a standard to avoid buses running over middle medians. • During the PopUp Main event on South Main, I received positive comments from CATA operators regarding the landscaped medians, bike lanes, and the flow and speed of traffic. • At significant trip generators or high traffic volume areas, bus pullouts along with space for a shelter would be beneficial. It would remove the bus from moving traffic, provide a safer boarding/alighting area for passengers, and encourage more choice riders due to safety and convenience. • CATA bus riders are first pedestrians, then bus riders, then pedestrians again. At major trip generators or high traffic volume areas, crosswalks and signage need to be in place to provide a safer walking and bus stop access environment. • On the highest traffic volumes streets that also have the highest ridership routes (example: Markham, 12th/Kanis, Asher/Colonel Glenn, Baseline) a dedicated bus lane would be ideal. The ability for a bus to have a dedicated lane or bus pullout at bus stops and remove itself from the flow of traffic provides a safer environment for autos, pedestrians, bicyclists, and bus riders. We would like to know if CATA has any suggestions that might be included. We are looking at the Master Street Plan, Subdivision Ordinance, Boundary Street Ordinance. Please let me know if you and CATA have any recommendations. Thanks for your time — Walter Malone, AICP Planning Manager 2
