On -,e way to speed regional travel is to use abandoned railroad rights-of-
ere_available, for new transportation corridors. One such opportunity
may be the abandoned Rock Island line that runs from southwestern Little Rock
to near Bauxite in Saline County. Utilizing this route could take some of the
current traffic burden off Interstate 30 between Pulaski and Saline Counties.
During 2002, Metroplan completed a study to evaluate the cost of purchas-
ing this right-of-way for possible future construction of a transportation artery.
The study, conducted by Carter and Burgess for Metroplan, concluded that
right-of-way acquisition would require the purchase of about 179 acres for an
estimated sum total of $1,100,000.
