COA REQUEST: Construct a 220 square foot connector between the cathedral and the
education building
PROJECT BACKGROUND, DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS: The property is located
north of I-630 on the northwest corner of 8th and Rock streets. The Gothic Revival structure was
constructed in 1888. It is listed as contributing in the architectural survey of the MacArthur Park
Historic District and on the National Register of Historic Places. The Education Building is of
A00k the Colonial Revival style.
The project request entails the construction of a one -storied connector between the cathedral and
the education building. Restrooms are planned in the area in order to provide handicapped
accessible facilities for worshipers. The connector is approximately I F x 19' or 222 square feet,
and is set back from both structures' eastern wall lines; it is setback approximately 1' from the
education building and 10' from the cathedral's northern tower. There is one window on the
connector's east elevation. There is a flat roof with a 2'/2' parapet wall connecting both buildings.
The building materials and architectural style combines elements of the two architectural styles
of the cathedral and the education building in terms of massing, openings, materials and
construction. The fire escape stairway on the cathedrals north side will be retained.
NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACT AND REACTION: At the time of distribution. there were no
objections, by letter or phone, to the applicant's request.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION: It is staff recommendation that the request for new
construction of a connector between the buildings be approved. Should there be changes
from the architectural plans as presented, staff will be notified and appropriate measures taken.
