ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
The QQA retained the services of
three professionals in the field
of architectural history to com-
pare and evaluate all of the build-
ings surveyed. This architectural
jury assigned to each building a
rating based on three categories
of architectural significance. The
categories and their criteria are:
PRIORITY I (I): Includes those
structures and sites that contri-
bute most to the architectural
ensemble of Little Rock. They
ire considered irreplaceable and
should be preserved and protected
:o prevent a loss of historic re-
ources to the city, state, and
ation. In this category are
uildings that are:
- the best available examples of
a particular style or period
extant in the study area.
-- the work of a major architect
or builder.
- individual structures that are
part of a row or group that
have exceptional visual signi-
ficance.
- buildings that play a critical
role in establishing the over-
all visual and aesthetic
quality of the area.
PRIORITY II (II): Includes all
structures that are considered
valuable for the period and style
Of architecture or building art
that they represent. or ara of
visual or historic significance
when viewed in the setting in
which they exist. The role of
an individual structure is con-
sidered on the basis of its value
to the neighborhood, and the loss
Of or desecration to any structure
on this list is a loss to the
city and neighborhood. In this
category are buildings that:
--are of a lesser architectural
significance than; those rated
in Priority I but which still
play an important part in es-
tablishing the area's overall
visual and aesthetic quality.
contribute to the character of
the area through a sympathetic
use of building materials,
form massing, roof lines, and
in some cases detailing.
PRIORITY III (III): Includes all
remaining structures, many of which
are acceptable to the area be-
cause they are well maintained and
are of a compatible. use and scale.
They should be -reviewed for the
effect that their change or demo-
lition will have on the visual or
historic character of the surround-
ing structures or of the area.
ASTERISK (*): An asterisk beside
a category number indicates that
if improvements are made on a
structure as outlined on the
survey.form, the building may
quality for a higher rating.
