I spotted something in another photograph that I wanted to ask you about. You had mentioned painting the front door the same color as the trim. I see in the photograph that the front door and sidelights have a stain and varnished finish on them rather than a painted finish. I had missed that when I responded previously about it as changing colors on painted finishes is fine. However, since the front door has an unpainted finish, the stained and varnished finish should be restored rather than painted over on the door and sidelights. I recommend sanding or steel wooling the damaged areas to get a clean surface and to get any loose and flaking varnish off the wood. Then stain it to match the original stain color and for a protective coating, they make polyurethane finishes in a satin luster so that it has some sheen to it like a varnish would, but not a high gloss as that will make the wood look like plastic. The polyurethane finish will help protect the wood longer, and it doesn't get that old blackened gummy look that varnish gets with age. Lyndsey, was the plan to mount your new sign to the existing white board there, or replace that part of it? The reason I am asking questions is I want to know if changing out the center of an existing mounted sign constitutes the need to apply and go through the approval process for signage, and so I can properly advise other easement property owners with signs as to what procedure to follow. > > Cheers, > Paul > > Paul Porter > Technical Services Coordinator/Conservation Easement Coordinator > [cid:image003.jpg@01D20DA5.8AD9A510] Arkansas Historic Preservation > Program a division of the Department of Arkansas Heritage > 1100 North Street | Little Rock, AR 72201 > office: 501.683.6672 > fax: 501.324.9154 > ArkansasPreservation.com<http://arkansaspreservation.com/> > Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/ARHistoricPreservation> | > Twitter<https://twitter.com/SavingARPlaces> > #AuthenticArkansas > #ArkansasPreservation > [County Courthouse Logo-Small] > > From: Minyard, Brian [mailto:BMinyard@littlerock.gov] > Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2018 10:34 AM > To: Lyndsey Dilks > Cc: Paul Porter > Subject: RE: 1008 Cumberland - Sign update > > My mistake, I signed the roofing COC last year. > > Yes, you need an application for a new sign. Here is a link to the Guidelines: https://www.littlerock.gov/for- businesses/planning-and-development/boards-commissions/local-ordinance-district/ Section VII E of the guidelines deals with signs. The ordinance states that you must receive a COA before a sign permit can be issued. > > I am busy till 2:30. Here is a link to the application page. https://www.littlerock.gov/media/1774/historic-district-commission-application-2016.pdf The application deadline is March 9th for a hearing on April 9th. You will need to start the title/abstract company now to get the property owners names and addresses. See the instructions on the application for clarification. > > On the door paint color, the HDC does not review that. Your roofers will not be able to get a building permit without it. If you have a quote from them, you may scan and send it to me. The choice seems to be between the red band being on the address or on “The Lash Queen”. Either way, it looks great. I think since it is going to be mounted on the same posts and will be the same dimensions as the existing signage that it is a non-issue for me. Brian, do you need an official ok from me? As for paint colors, that is up to your personal taste from the easement perspective. I don’t know if the city has guidelines on that. > > Have your roofers finished the project yet? I have attached a couple of drafts that the designer sent over. We plan to use the existing sign structure. These three signs will be affixed to the structure. At least that is my understanding. That is how it was done by the previous owner. Do these proofs meet the easement guidelines? If not, please let me know what needs to be done to be within the guidelines. > > Also, I intend to paint the front door the same color as the windows, a burnt red. Is this something that needs to be approved? I believe it will be a significant improvement to the façade of the home. Again, please let me know if there is something else that needs to be done. > > I very much appreciate the assistance. > > Kindest regards, > Lyndsey D. Dilks > > > <image001.png> > Lyndsey D.
