Good afternoon Thom and Brian,
I had to go back through our email discussions about the quote and such from June of last year in my emails to refresh
my memory about the specifics of your roofing project. Is the storm damage to the roof cresting in the embedded image
more recent than the storm where you lost the big tree out front in 2016? I took the attached photo on June 22nd that
year. As I recall, the big storm that took out the big tree in front came about a week later, as I remember being hunkered
down in my house while the tornado sirens were blaring away as it went along the I-630 corridor pretty close to my
house too. I concur with Brian’s statement about keeping the original cresting and reusing it, and only replicating pieces
that are too damaged or deteriorated to repair.
I looked at the Grand Manor shingles on the CertainTeed website and the texture and design will complement the fish
scale and diamond shaped shingles on the walls of the house quite nicely. On the estimate Jared prepared, the 4th bullet
point about inspecting the sidewall and headwall flashings and repair/replace as needed doesn’t have a metal type
specified. Thom, I saw in your email to Brian that the house has copper flashings now (durable and long lived) but the
metal type isn’t specified on the estimate for any replacement pieces needed. I would ask your roofer to articulate
copper on that on the estimate. Also with aluminum flashings for the plumbing vent stacks involved, I would also ask
about the fastener types they plan to use. Aluminum fasteners should be used on the plumbing vent stack flashings, and
on the copper flashings, copper, brass or stainless steel fasteners should be used to avoid galvanic corrosion. Galvanized
steel fasteners will corrode with copper flashings so be sure to ask your roofer about the fastener type they plan to use. I
also concur with Brian’s request to see the aluminum drip edge match either the shingles or the fascia, depending on
how it is mounted.
I hope you find my comments helpful.
Cheers,
Paul

Brian,
Thanks for the quick reply. I’ll work on the website, and we’re supposed to use the old copper flashing with
some new if needed.
The storm where the tree fell destroyed all the cresting on the upper portion (picture attached)

Mr. Degraff,
We may be able to do this with a COC Certificate of Compliance (staff approval). I read over the roofing
estimate and there are things that need to be discussed. One is the prefinished drip edge. This cannot
be shiny aluminum. It needs to be of a color that blends with the shingles or blends with the painted
fascia. I need a website or be shown a sample of the shingle roofing style. The second is what you call
ridge toppers, we call cresting. That cannot be changed or removed. It can be reproduced if it is proven
to be deteriorated to a point that it cannot be restored. See photo below.

On the painting, brick that has never been painted cannot be painted. Basic painting can be done with a
COC.
You need to touch base with Paul Porter, he coordinates the easements. You have an easement on your
house. Tom Marr is the tax credit person. For ease of flow, get Paul Porter’s sign off first, me second ,
and then Tom’s. I have included Paul Porter on this email.

Aloha Brian,
I have been working with the historic tax credit folks and will be submitting a 2yr plan by the
end of the month.

From what I can tell the Roof (attached) and Exterior paint will be the most likely to need
MacArthur historic district review.
I’m working on possibly changing the ridge toppers, but haven’t received the quote yet. If the
price is right we’d like to do it. If not, we’ll repaint the old ones.
Please LMK if you need anything else on my end.
V/R,
Thom

Jared,
Attached is the quote we need updated.
I was able to count the ridge toppers, I just need to know the length of ridge
toppers needed for the fabrication of new ones (or a ball park estimate)
